General
- Yohimbine chloride -- a standardized
form of yohimbine-- is a prescription medicine that has been used to
treat erectile dysfunction
- Yohimbine hydrochloride is the
standardized form of yohimbine that is available as a prescription
medicine in the United States, and has been shown in human studies to be
effective in the treatment of male impotence.
Process
- The yohimbe tree is a tall evergreen
that is native to western Africa. The bark of the tree contains a
chemical called yohimbine. The amount of yohimbine in dietary
supplements may vary; some yohimbe products have been found to contain
very little yohimbine.
- The levels of yohimbine that is
present in yohimbe bark extract are variable and often very low.
Applications
- The yohimbine alkaloids have been
widely employed as folk medicines, the former serving as a cure for
snake bites and a sedative,
the later finding applications as a fertility drug and an aphrodisiac.
-
It is
also known that yohimbine is contraindicated with MAO inhibitors, which
are often to be found in the action of many anti-depressants. Thus, a
physician's advice should be sought before starting on yohimbine, if you
are taking any form of anti-depression therapy.
-
A
novel affinity resin, yohimbine-agarose, was synthesized and used for
purification of a2-adrenerrgeicceptors.
Technology
-
a2-Adrenoreceptor mimics, prepared by molecular imprinting technique of
yohimbine, were used to select ligands from a phage display hexapeptide
library.
-
Phosphorimetry has been established as a powerful technique for the
trace determination of organic molecules. In this work, a room
temperature Phosphorescence based analytical method was devaloped for
the selective determination of yohimbine.
