Introduction
- An uninterruptible power
supply (UPS), also known as a continuous power supply (CPS) or a
battery backup is a device which maintains a continuous supply
of electric power to connected equipment by supplying power from
a separate source when utility power is not available.
- There are three distinct
types of UPS: off-line, line-interactive and double conversion
(also called on-line).
- A variety of design
approaches are used to implement UPS systems, each with distinct
performance
characteristics. The most common design approaches are as
follows:
• Standby
• Line Interactive
• Standby-Ferro
• Double Conversion On-Line
• Delta Conversion On-Line
-
A UPS is
typically used to protect computers and other digitally
controlled equipment.
Technology
- Static UPSs are a
major contender for industrial installations, and the
advantages and benefits they offer, have seen consultants
shifting their design criteria from Rotary to Static
technology.
- Static UPS physical
sizes and inverters have changed dramatically in recent
years with thyristor technology being replaced with IGBT
technology.
- UPS technology include
not only increased use of web-enabled systems, but also the
ability of manufacturers to build UPS with a smaller
footprint.
- Flywheel technology
enabling smaller UPS footprints, static UPS systems
electronics have been getting smaller due to higher power
transistors. Power Innovations' UPQ and NetAgent technology
will provide an uninterrupted, quality power supply, which
will help ensure smooth operations of the technology during
the course of the Games.
Application
- The UPS for the
Cisco CVA120 Series Cable Voice Adapter provides a
backup power supply for the cable voice adapter and the
telephones attached to it.
- DC UPS technology
developed in the telecommunications industry provides a
highly reliable, cost effective alternative to
traditional AC UPS systems, especially when applied in a
non-traditional, distributed manner.
Distributed DC UPS technology can also be effectively
deployed at the cabinet level.
- The main
application of the IGBT is for use as a switching
component in inverter circuits which are used in both
power supply and motor drive applications.
- The application of
Synchrotron Radiation Source (SRS) is the UK’s only
dedicated source of high energy synchrotron radiation.
- The UPS also has a
facility which loads the AC source gradually over a
period of 10 seconds after the input is applied.
Market
- The APC
Back-UPS ES 750 (BE750G), which carries an estimated
retail price of $99.99, is currently available in
select retail locations and will be introduced in
North America.
- The flywheel
technology is fairly new to the SEA market, and
persistent efforts of creating awareness. he market
is attractive, but highly competitive, with the
participation of local and multinational
competitors.
- The virtual
collapse of the telecommunications market had a
major impact on the power supplies industry.
Growth in the UPS market is tied to the performance
of telecommunication systems comprising of extensive
networked infrastructure of computers.
- The global
consumption of electrical power is projected to leap
to 20 trillion kilowatt-hours.
- Extensive
growth in the personal computers market, across
consumer and SOHO (Small Office Home Office)
segments, has also contributed to the rising demand
for UPS equipment.
