General
- Thionyl chloride or
thionyl dichloride is an inorganic compound with the formula SOCl2.
- Thionyl chloride is a
reactive chemical reagent used in chlorination reactions.
- It is a colorless,
distillable liquid at room temperature and pressure that decomposes above
140 °C.
Process
- N-Acylhydrazones of o-hydroxyaryl
ketones react with thionyl chloride to give N-arylhydrazonoyl chlorides in
good yields.
- If the thionyl chloride
was irreversibly adsorbed or reacted, the pressure would be expected to
decrease and remain at that lower pressure upon expansion. This discovery
lead to a search for a new getter for Li/SOClz batteries.
Uses
- Thionyl chloride is
used inside lithium-thionyl chloride batteries as the positive active
material with lithium as the negative active material.
- It is also used as a
reagent for the production of other chemical compounds or materials.
- It is also used
during synthesis of drugs, vitamins, and herbicides. It is commercially
available and used in industrial chemical reactions.
