A textile
is a flexible material comprised of a network of natural or artificial
fibers often referred to as thread or yarn. Yarn is produced by spinning raw
wool fibers, linen, cotton, or other material on a spinning wheel to produce
long strands known as yarn.

The words fabric and cloth are
commonly used in textile assembly trades as synonyms for textile. Textile
refers to any material made of interlacing fibres. Fabric refers to any
material made through weaving, knitting, crocheting, or bonding. Cloth
refers to a finished piece of fabric that can be used for a purpose such
as covering a bed.

Textiles have an assortment of
uses, the most common of which are for clothing and containers such as
bags and baskets. In the household, they are used in carpeting,
upholstered furnishings, window shades, towels, covering for tables, beds,
and other flat surfaces, and in art. In the workplace, they are used in
industrial and scientific processes such as filtering.

Textiles can be made from many
materials. These materials come from four main sources: animal, plant,
mineral, and synthetic.
- During past years the real value of
output of the Chinese wool textile industry recorded an average annual
growth rate of over 10 per cent. The main contributing factor was the
rapid increase in domestic demand for wool textile products as a result of
strong increases in household incomes, but more recently, with increasing
foreign direct investment, exports have become an additional driving
force.
- Currently textile market of Russian consumes
about 300 – 330 thousand tons of cotton fiber annually.
- India can also grab opportunities in the
export market. The industry has the potential of attaining $34bn export
earnings by the year 2010.
- Today textile sector accounts for nearly 14%
of the total industrial output. Indian fabric is in demand with its
ethnic, earthly colored and many textures. The textile sector accounts
about 30% in the total export. The textile industry is the largest
industry in terms of employment economy, expected to generate 12 million
new jobs by 2010.
