General
-
Taxus brevifolia and named it 'taxol'. When
Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) licensed the compound for sale they claimed
rights to the name as well and people responded by referring to the
generic name as 'paclitaxel'.
-
Paclitaxel is a mitotic inhibitor used in cancer chemotherapy. It was
discovered in a National Cancer Institute program at the Research
Triangle Institute
- Taxol, a
potent anticancer natural product (with activity against a number of
leukeamias and solid tumours in the breast, ovary, brain, and lung in
humans) has stimulated an intense research effort over recent years.
Process
Technology
-
Bioxel
recently installed an SMB purification process, using equipment built by
Groupe NovaSep .
-
Bioxel
found that the best strategy for purification was to push cephalomannine
together with paclitaxel as far as possible through the process,
favoring high paclitaxel yield along the way.
-
Currently a cell
culture method developed by Phyton Catalytic [now a division of DFB
Pharmaceuticals] is used by BMS to produce taxol.
Application
taxol application could
enhance axonal growth of neurons cultured on an inhibitory substrate.
Taxol application
interferes with the formation of retraction bulbs
