General
- Sodium hypochlorite is
a chemical compound with the formula NaClO.
- Sodium hypochlorite
solution, commonly known as bleach, is frequently used as a disinfectant
and as a bleaching agent.
- Sodium hypochlorite is
a liquid with an odor of chlorine. Usually it is clear but some solutions
are greenish to yellow in color.
Process
- Sodium hypochlorite
may be prepared by absorbing chlorine gas in cold sodium hydroxide
solution.
- Sodium hypochlorite
has traditionally been produced by bubbling chlorine gas through a
solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH), to produce sodium hypochlorite
(NaOCl), salt (NaCl) and water (H2O).
Uses
- Sodium hypochlorite
is commonly used as household bleach, for commercial laundering, in
the manufacture of paper and pulp and for industrial chemical
synthesis.
- Sodium hypochlorite
(or chlorine gas) is also used in the disinfection of drinking-water
and swimming pools.
- Sodium hypochlorite
(NaOCl) is a compound that can be effectively used for water
purification.
- Today,
approximately 70% of the total amount of sodium hypochlorite produced
is used to make bleach used for household cleaners and laundry
additives, used for their bleaching, disinfecting and stain-removing
properties.
