General
- Sodium fluoride is the
chemical compound with the formula NaF.
- This colourless solid
is the main source of the fluoride ion in diverse applications.
- The mineral form of
NaF, villiaumite, is moderately rare. It is known from plutonic nepheline
syenite rocks.
- Sodium Fluoride is
prepared by neutralizing waste hydrofluoric acid resulting from the
production of super phosphate fertilizer.
Uses
- Sodium fluoride is
used in laundry souring, manufacturing enamels, manufacturing coated
papers, wood preservative , foam production, opal glass, ore flotation
and water fluoridation.
- Sodium fluoride is
used as a cleaning agent, often to remove iron stains.
- It is a reagent for
the synthesis of fluorocarbons.

- Due to its efficacy
in caries prophylaxis and easy application, sodium fluoride is still
used for caries prevention in the form of fluoridated drinking water,
fluoride tablets, fluoridated salt or milk.
- Hydrofluoric acid
is quite weak and even the organic acids can decompose sodium fluoride
with the production of hydrofluoric acid.
- In the US, NaF was
once used to fluoridate drinking water but its use has been displaced
by hexafluorosilicic acid or the related sodium salt.
