Introduction
- A rose is
a perennial shrub or vine of the genus Rosa,
within the family rosaceae, that contains over 100 species.
- Roses are
one of the most popular garden shrubs, as well as the most
popular and commonly sold florists' flowers.
- The rose
has always been valued for its beauty and has a long history of
symbolism.
- There are
currently thousands of varieties of roses developed for bloom
shape, size, fragrance and even for lack of prickles.
- The most
important growth factors are light, temperature, and water.
Technology
-
Cultivation of nursery also improves the overall growth of
plant substantially in terms of height as compare to outside
condition.
-
Cultivation of nursery inside greenhouse also helps in
improving the economic conditions of the farmers of the
region. The water requirement also reduces inside the
greenhouse. Therefore, this technology will also be useful
in the water scarcity area.
-
Solvent distillation is now more frequently used to extract
the aroma of rose blossoms.
Preparation of the Extract
-
Dried rose flowers from mainland China were soaked in
distilled water for 24 h and then boiled under reflux
for 4 h. After cooling, the extract was filtered using
filter paper, and the filtrate was lyophilized.
-
The most common aroma concentrates of rose are rose oil
and rose water, derived from steam distillation; and
rose concrete and rose absolute from solvent extraction.
-
Rose ottos are extracted through steam distillation,
while rose absolutes are obtained through solvent
extraction or supercritical carbon dioxide extraction,
with the absolute being used more commonly in perfumery.
Use
-
Attar
of rose is the steam-extracted essential oil from
rose flowers that has been used in perfumes for
centuries.
-
Rose
oil is used primarily as a fragrance component in
pharmaceutical preparations and is extensively used
as a fragrance ingredient in perfumes, creams, and
soaps.
-
Rose
oil is, perhaps surprisingly, one of the most
antiseptic essences. This combined with its slightly
tonic and soothing qualities and its action on the
capillaries, make it useful for virtually all types
of skin.
-
Rose
also has a positive effect on broken superficial
capillaries and is thus ideal for mature, dry or
sensitive skin.
Market
-
The creation of a new rose variety is important
as roses command a share of $10 billion in the
global market of $49 billion cut flower sales a
year.
-
In India, states like Maharashtra, Karnataka,
Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Haryana have
emerged as major floriculture centres in recent
times.
-
Indian floriculture industry has been shifting
from traditional flowers to cut flowers for
exports.
