Manufacturing Process and Reactions
Industrial Resins Manufacturing Process

Formaldehyde resins are made by reacting formaldehyde with any of a variety of substances such as urea and phenol The reagents are mixed to form a thermosetting crosslinked polymer used in reconstituted wood (e.g. plywood) and timber adhesives.

Preparation of Phenol-Resorcinol Formaldehyde Resin The resorcinol-formaldehyde resin is expensive because high price resorcinol must be used. To reduce the resin cost and maintain its excellent performance as far as possible, a part of phenol can take place of resorcinol in resin, resulting in Phenol resorcinol - formaldehyde resin.
Resorcinol Lipid Formation These lipids are formed of a resorcinol (1,3-dihydroxybenzene) group alkylated at the position 5 (-R)  with an odd-numbered carbon chain (non-isoprenoid) of various length (C17 to C27) either saturated (alkylresorcinols) or unsaturated (alkenyl resorcinols) with 1 to 6 double bonds.
Reactivity of Resorcinol Formaldehyde Resin with Nitric Acid Solid-state infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and elemental analysis have been used to evaluate the reactivity of resorcinol formaldehyde resin with nitric acid and characterize the solid product. Two distinct reactions were identified within the temperature range 25-55 °C.

Kinetics of the Uncatalyzed Reactions between Resorcinol and Formaldehyde

Because resorcinol and particularly its condensation products with formaldehyde have found ever-increasing application in the past few years, a sounder and more scientific basis for these reactions is warranted, and a systematic study of the kinetics of the resorcinol-formaldehyde condensation was undertaken.

Carbohydrate modified Phenol Formaldehyde resins

For adhesive self-sufficiency, the wood industry needs new adhesive systems in which all or part of the petroleum-derived phenolic component is replaced by a renewable material without sacrificing high durability or ease of bonding.

Azo Dyes Based on Resorcinol-formaldehyde Oligomer

Resorcinol-formaldehyde oligomer was synthesized by the condensation of resorcinol and formaldehyde in presence of oxalic acid. The mole ratio of reactants employed was 1 :0 .5, respectively. Enhancing Adhesion Between Dissimilar Elastomers

Regulatory demands in Europe have created a need for the European hose market to reformulate hose compounds, use new hose construction techniques, or both1. Alcohol-containing fuels especially require  the addition of a vapor-impermeable barrier to the hose construction in order to meet regulatory requirements.

Survey of Wood Adhesives

Adhesives may be defined as any substance capable of attaching materials together by means of surface attachment. This property is not necessarily an intrinsic characteristic of the substance itself since the adhesive may be much weaker than the materials joined together, but it is developed as the adhesive interacts with the adherends under certain conditions of temperature and pressure.

Hazards, Safety and Guides
Resorcinol- Health Based Reassessment

Formaldehyde Environmental Health Criteria Formaldehyde has been shown to cause pulmonary effects on healthy and on asthmatic subjects (not sensitized to formaldehyde) at a concentration that is already irritant. Precise thresholds have not been established for the pulmonary irritant effects of inhaled formaldehyde.
Wood Working Hazards Many hardwood dusts, especially those from exotic woods, are  common sensitizers and can cause allergic skin reactions. Some  hardwoods can cause allergic reactions in individuals working
with or using finished hardwoods.
Resorcinol information The meta (1,3) isomer is resorcinol (also known as resorcin), which forms clear needle crystals used in the production of diazo dyes and plasticizers. It is produced by sulfonating benzene with fuming sulfuric acid and fusing the resulting benzenedisulfonic acid with caustic soda.
Resorcinol Formaldehyde Latex RFL stands for Resorcinol Formaldehyde Latex. These three building blocks of RFLs are combined chemically to make a very strong, heat resistant, highly flexible adhesive which is ideally suited for rubber-to-fabric adhesion.
