Farming
- The term ‘Poultry’
applies to a rather wide variety of birds of several species and it
refers to them whether they are alive or dressed.
- Poultry farming is
the practice of raising poultry, such as chickens, turkeys, ducks geese,
as a subcategory of animal husbandry, for the purpose of farming meat or
eggs for food.
- The contrasting
method of poultry farming is free range, and friction between these two
main methods has led to long term issues of ethical consumerism.
- Yarding is actually a
separate cult by which a chicken and a cow are combined when farming
poultry.
- Today poultry farming
has transformed itself into an organized industry. It plays a major role
in the fight against malnutrition and poverty among the rural masses of
our country.
Processing
- Large producers
harvest all their birds at once (all-in, all-out). Small producers often
"skim" by harvesting larger birds and leaving smaller ones to grow.
- A growing number of
small producers are raising poultry outdoors on pasture, processing the
birds on-farm or in regional processing facilities, and selling the meat
directly to customers at the farm or at a farmers' market.
- Slaughter of poultry
in suitable surroundings by hygenic methods is essential for the
production of wholesome meat, extension of the shelf life of the
product, reduction of post harvest losses and protection of public
health.
Industry
- The production of
poultry on a small scale is very important in less developed countries,
particularly in places some way from the main commercial and industrial
centres.
- An Indian poultry
industry has the inherent potential to become the world- leader.
- Traditionally many
poor people are raising poultry in their back yards. These rustic
chickens and eggs fetch higher price in local market.
- Many countries are
exporting eggs at prices lower than production costs. Poultry industry
with high investments in these countries is under threat of extinction.
- In a global poultry
bazaar, Indian eggs are cheapest.
