General
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH, PVA, or PVAL) is a
water-soluble synthetic polymer.
Polyvinyl alcohol has excellent film forming,
emulsifying, and adhesive properties. It is also resistant to oil, grease
and solvent. It is odorless and nontoxic. It has high tensile strength,
flexibility, as well as high oxygen and aroma barrier.
-
Polyvinyl alcohol is a white soluble
high-molecular compound, not soluble in ordinary organic solvents.
-
Polyvinyl alcohol for food use is an odourless and
tasteless, translucent, white or cream colored granular powder. It is
soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, but insoluble in other
organic solvents.
Process
Application
- Polyvinyl alcohol is
used in adhesive and thickener material in latex paints, paper coatings,
hairsprays, shampoos and glues.
- PVA is widely used in
freshwater sport fishing. Small bags made from PVA are filled with dry- or
oil-based bait and attached to the hook, or the baited hook is placed
inside the bag and cast into the water.
- PVA is used as raw
material to produce coating material and adhesives etc. also to produce
pulp finishing agent, soil ameliorator, film and polyvinyl butyral etc.
Market
- The combined exports of
China and Taiwan amounted to about 38,700 tons in 2006, and if the exports
are regulated by the anti-dumping problem, these exports must find out
other markets.
- Due to the growth
potential, Asian markets including the Chinese domestic market should be
home for such material. But, if Chinese producers aggressively increase
the production capacity, the problem may not be so simple.
- The domestic demand of
PVA is estimated to be at least 5,000 Tons per annum for the next coming
years.
- The use of polyvinyl
alcohol (PVA) as a coating agent for food supplements poses no health
risks, according to a recent EFSA investigation.
- The European
supplements market was estimated to be worth 5.2 billion in 2005, with
growth rate expected to peak at 4.4 percent over this year before dropping
to a steady 4.1 percent for the subsequent five years. By 2011, the market
is predicted to be worth around 6.6 billion.
