General
- Passiflora
edulis or passion fruit is a plant cultivated commercially for its
fruit.
- It is native to
South America and widely grown in India, New Zealand, the Caribbean,
Brazil, southern Florida, Hawaii, Australia, East Africa, Israel and
South Africa.
- The passion
fruit is round to oval, yellow or dark purple at maturity, with a soft
to firm, juicy interior filled with numerous seeds. The fruit can be
grown to eat or for its juice, which is often added to other fruit
juices to enhance aroma.
- The two types
of passion fruit have greatly different exterior appearances. The bright
yellow passion fruit and dark purple passion fruit .
Process
- Small-scale oilseed
processing is of interest as a potential on-farm or community enterprise
that can increase income and employment in rural areas .
- Many seeds, nuts, and
kernels contain oil that can be extracted and used in cooking, as an
ingredient in other foods, as a nutritional supplement, and as a raw
material for the manufacture of soap, body and hair oils, detergents, and
paints.
- Oil extraction can be
done mechanically with an oil press, expeller, or even with a wooden
mortar and pestle—a traditional method that originated in India.
Technology
- Production and
preservation of Passion Fruit Juice was examined to reduce the spoilage
and to increase the shelf life of the juice using chemical preservatives.
- The preservation of the
juice was carried out using sugar, benzoic acid, citric and a combination
of citric and benzoic acid under room temperature.
- Passion fruit is grown
as a fresh fruit for making juice and direct consumption.Juice extracted
from these fruit is of high nutritional value and of great importance to
human health .
- Juice may be extracted
directly from passion fruit, may be squeezed from crushed material so as
to include considerable amount of pulp.
Market
- Passionfruit has
arisen as a crop of interest in South Sulawesi. It is a very small crop
in terms of production, number of farmers and value.
- Passionfruit is grown
in highland areas above 700m. Most production is now in Malakaji and
Toraja.
- The Australian
Passionfruit Industry Association (APIA) estimates there are now 400
passionfruit producers in Australia.
- Imports of passion
fruit juice represent no more than 1.7 percent of total U.S. fruit juice
imports and quite possibly only about one percent.

technical support program, APIA is also improving communications within
the industry and has launched a new website,
www.australianpassionfruit.com.au, making a wide range of information
and services available to the industry, including growers, potential
growers, researchers and consumers.
- The work is already
providing results that continue to strengthen the passionfruit industry
and relies upon the technical expertise provided by Peasley
Horticultural Services.
