General
- Palladium is a rare
and lustrous silvery-white metal that was discovered in 1803 by William
Hyde Wollaston.
- Palladium, along
with platinum, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium form a group of
elements referred to as the platinum group metals (PGMs).
- Palladium is a soft
silver-white metal that resembles platinum. It is the least dense and has
the lowest melting point of the platinum group metals. It is soft and
ductile when annealed and greatly increases its strength and hardness
when it is cold-worked.
Application
- Palladium is used in
dentistry,[11][12] watch making, in blood sugar test strips, in aircraft
spark plugs and in the production of surgical instruments and electrical
contacts. Palladium is also used to make professional transverse
flutes.
- The biggest
application of palladium in electronics is making the multilayer ceramic
capacitor. Palladium are used as electrodes in multi-layer ceramic
capacitors.
- Palladium (sometimes
alloyed with nickel) is used in connector platings in consumer
electronics. It is also used in plating of electronic components and in
soldering materials.
Mining Process
- The ramp and fill
method begins in a horizontal stope or production level and involves the
use of hand held or mechanized drills for blasting and load-haul-dump
(LHD) mucking machines to haul away the ore using an access
ramp.
- Sub-level stoping
involves a ramp along the footwall of the reef to allow access to the
orebody at 50 foot vertical intervals after which time long hole
drilling and blasting methods are used to remove the panel in between
the two sublevels.
- The crude platinum
salt that results is then heated to create a fine platinum powder. The
crude palladium salt produced by the addition of ammonia is recovered
through filtration, re-dissolved in ammonia, and precipitated to form
high-grade palladium salt.
Market
- A decision by the
Japanese government to reduce the subsidy for the palladium alloys in
dentistry contributed to a drop in demand of 60,000 ounces (8%) to
725,000 ounces.
- In Japan as a whole
demand declined by more than 205,000 to 450,000 ounces, the lowest level
in more than a decade, and outstripping the modest improvements in
demand in North America and Europe.
- A fall in the use of
palladium-based catalysts by the bulk chemicals industry offset a slight
increase in demand for palladium gauze by nitric acid
producers.
