General
- The common oat plant (Avena
sativa) is a species of cereal grain grown for its seed, which is known
by the same name.
- While oats are suitable for human
consumption as oatmeal and rolled oats, one of the most common uses is
as livestock feed.
- Oats are generally considered
"healthy", or a health food, being touted commercially as
nutritious.
- Oats are sown in the spring or
early summer, as soon as the soil can be worked.
-
Oat is the only
cereal containing a globulin or legume-like protein, avenalin, as the
major (80%) storage protein.
Cultivation
- Oats can also be cultivated for
green fodder as well as for seed, also in summer in Dhunche, Rasuwa
(1950 m).
- In high altitude areas of about
3500-3800 m, the aim would be to cultivate oats as a summer fodder for
hay production, to feed the ruminants in winter.
- The cultivation of oats in summer
in particular sites/locations for particular use and to address a
particular farming system needs to be done, with some specific oat
cultivars.
Process
- Oats are taken into the mill at
harvest time from a select registered panel of local growers.
- The oats are then dried and safely
stored until needed. When the oats enter the Milling process, there are
five distinct stages to this process:Cleaning, drying and
grading,Dehulling and cleaning., Groats to pinhead, Pinhead to
oatlets.,Packaging and distribution.
- When the oats enter the milling
process, they are cleaned, taking off straws, stones and weed seeds and
are then sent through a stream of air to remove any dust or light grains
that would be unsuitable for milling.
- The product is then automatically
weighed, dropped in its packet, the packet is then pressed down, folded
and sealed.
Market
- White Oats are made from high
quality natural oat grain imported from the best oat producing regions
of the world.
- Oats Markets, Inc. is a nationwide
chain of natural and organic foods markets in the U.S. and Canada with
annual sales of more than $1 billion.
- The world's leading oats producer
is the Commonwealth of Independent States, which far outpaces the United
