General
- Sugarcane or sugar
cane (Saccharum) is a genus of 6 to 37 species (depending on taxonomic
interpretation) of tall perennial grasses (family Poaceae, tribe
Andropogoneae), native to warm temperate to tropical regions of the Old
World. They have stout, jointed, fibrous stalks that are rich in sugar
and measure 2 to 6 meters tall
- Sugarcane processing
is focussed on the production of cane sugar (sucrose) from sugarcane.
Other products of the processing include bagasse, molasses, and
filtercake.
- Bagasse, the
residual woody fiber of the cane, is used for several purposes: fuel for
the boilers and lime kilns, production of numerous paper and paperboard
products and reconstituted panelboard, agricultural mulch, and as a raw
material for production of chemicals.
Processing
- Hand cutting is the
most common harvesting method throughout the world but some locations
(e. g.,
Florida, Louisiana and Hawaii) have used mechanical
harvesters for several years.
- After cutting, the
cane is loaded by hand, mechanical grab loaders, or continuous loaders.
Cane is transported to the mills using trailers, trucks, railcars, or
barges, depending upon the relative location of the cane fields and the
processing plants.
- When the cane is
cut, rapid deterioration of the cane begins. Therefore, unlike
sugarbeets, sugarcane
cannot be stored for later processing without
excessive deterioration of the sucrose content.
Market
- Illinois-based
Archer-Daniels-Midland Co., the nation's largest corn ethanol producer,
is planning on entering the Brazilian sugar cane ethanol production
market soon by making one or more investments in the country's
production infrastructure, company executives said this week.
- Based on the rate of
increase in population and per capita consumption (refer to Annex Table
4), demand of sugar for household consumption in the Bicol region is
projected to decrease at a rate of 1.62% per annum or an annual average
of 13,890.41MT within the next five years.
- Total demand of
sugar for household consumption and processing of soft drinks is
projected to decrease at a rate of 0.6% per annum or an annual average
of 18,966.56 MT within the next five years
Report
- In the tropical
region, Maharashtra is a major sugarcane growing state where the area
under sugarcane crop increased marginally from 5.90 lakh hectares to
5.99 lakh hectares but the sugarcane production declined from 53.14
million tonnes in 1999-2000 to 37.01 million tonnes in 2002-03.
- Fresh estimates of
cost of cultivation/production of sugarcane, generated under the
Comprehensive Scheme (CS) by the Directorate of Economics &
Statistics pertaining to the year 2002-03 are available for the major
growing states of Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil
Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
- The scenario was
almost the same in respect of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka where the
area increased marginally from 2.31 and 3.73 lakh hectares in 1999-2000
to 2.34 and 3.85 lakh hectares respectively in 2002-03 but the
production declined from 18.51 and 37.57 million tonnes to 15.39 and
32.48 million tonnes respectively.
