General
-
Dichloromethane (DCM) or methylene chloride is the chemical compound
with the formula CH2Cl2.
- It is a
colorless, volatile liquid with a moderately sweet aroma.
- DCM is
widely used as a solvent, the general view being that it is one of the
less harmful of the chlorocarbons.
Process
- Methylene
chloride is produced either by the chlorination of methane, or by the
hydrochlorination of methanol to methyl chloride with the subsequent
chlorination of methyl chloride.
-
Oxyhydrochlorination, produces methylene chloride in addition to methyl
chloride,is a potential beginning to a gas-to-liquid fuels process.
Application
- DCM is
widely used as a paint stripper and a degreaser.
- Methylene
Chloride is used to decaffeinate coffee and to prepare extracts of hops
and other flavorings in the food industry.
- DCM is
used as an aerosol spray propellant and as a blowing agent for
polyurethane foams.
Report
- According
to experts methylene chloride, leading to formal or informal measures
against chlorinated substances.
- Several
industrial organisations tend to stress that particularly for the
infrequent consumer exposures the risks of DCM are minimal, and that the
alternative solvents are not as well researched.
