General

  • A matchstick is a wooden stick coated with a mixture containing phosphorous on one end. It is ignited whenever stroked with any rough surface or sides of the matchbox, which is purposely made rough.
  • A match is a consumable tool for lighting a fire under controlled circumstances on demand.
  • A match is typically a wooden stick or stiff paper stick  coated at one end with a material often containing the element phosphorus, which will ignite from the heat of friction if rubbed (against a suitable surface.

Process

  • Treatment of bamboo splints of size 1.5mmX1.5mmX38mm with sodium meta silicate, followed by dipping in diluted Hydrogen peroxide for 15-20 minutes.
  • The splints are then washed in water and dipped in Boric Acid or Boric Acid and Borax mixture fro around 5 minutes and dried.
  • Treated splints are then required to be dipped in molten wax at 80-1200C for 8-12 seconds followed by heating at around 1500C for 2-3 seconds on a hot plate.

Market

  • In India, matches were imported from France & England. Later in 1921, matches were manufactured at Calcutta by machines.
  • Today, 500 billion matches are used each year, about 200 billion from matchbooks.
  • The local matchstick industry has since ceased to exist; consequently a new market for this timber had to be found.

  • Matchstick-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been synthesized by catalytic pyrolysis of thiophene, using a mixture of cobalt nitrate and calcium nitrate as a catalyst.
  • United States President William H. Taft publicly asked Diamond Match to release their patent for the good of mankind. They did on January 28, 1911, Congress placed a high tax on matches made with white phosphorous.
