- Marjoram (Origanum
majorana, Lamiaceae) is a cold-sensitive perennial herb or undershrub
with sweet pine and citrus flavors. It is also called Sweet Marjoram or
Knotted Marjoram and Majorana hortensis. The name marjoram does not
directly derive from the Latin word maior.
- Marjoram is a
perennial aromatic herb. Its dried leaves and flower tops constitutes
the spice. The sweet marjoram is characterized by a strong spicy
pleasant odour. The flavour is fragrant, slightly sharp bitterish and
camphoraceous.

- Sweet marjoram is a
shrubby tender perennial that grows to about 1' tall with wiry,
red-brown stems and downy gray-green aromatic leaves. It produces tiny
white flowers on clustered spikes in summer.
- It is a zone 9 plant
and is therefore grown as an annual in cold climates. It does well in a
container and can be brought in for use during the winter.

and poor air circulation and likes a temperature of 70°F during the day
and 60°F at nighttime.
Application

used to settle the stomach and to relieve minor digestive upset.
Marjoram's stomach-settling properties have led to its use in preventing
motion sickness.
- The tea is also added
to bathwater to help relieve congestion and hay fever as well as aches and
pains.
- Marjoram tea has been
used historically for relief from symptoms of hay fever, sinus congestion,
indigestion, asthma, stomach pain, headache, dizziness, colds, coughs, and
nervous disorders.
Market
-
Fresh oregano and marjoram are
readily available through the produce markets being supplied by a number
of traditional market gardeners.
-
Marjoram is not as popular as
oregano. It tend to be more effected by seasonality than its robust
cousin, oregano.
Marjoram is usually
available as whole dried leaves and floral parts, and in powdered form.
Fresh marjoram is sometimes available at green grocers. If you have space
in your kitchen, in your garden, on a window sill, you could easily grow
your own.
