General
-
Magnesium hydroxide is an
inorganic compound with the chemical formula Mg(OH)2.
-
Magnesium hydroxide may
be referred to as Milk of Magnesia.
-
The solid mineral form of
magnesium hydroxide is known as brucite.
-
Magnesium Hydroxide is a
white or colorless, odorless powder and is sparingly soluble in water.
-
It is an alkaline
hydroxide compound.
-
Magnesium hydroxide is
available in the form of tablets or capsules, which are orally ingested
with water.
-
Other names for magnesium
hydroxide are Magnesium hydrate; milk of magnesia; magnesia magma.
Synthesis Process
-
Mg(OH)2 nano-particles
with fiber-like morphology were prepared by chemical precipitation
process, with the bittern from Qinghai Salt Lakes used as Mg2+ raw
material and ammonia water as precipitator.
-
It is generally prepared
by reacting magnesium sulfate or chloride with sodium hydroxide.
-
Magnesium hydroxide is
commercially available and there is no need to prepare it in the
laboratory. It can be precipitated by the metathesis reaction between
magnesium salts and sodium, potassium, or ammonium hydroxide.
-
Magnesium hydroxide(MH),
which is commonly used as a halogen-free flame retardant filler in
composite materials, was modified by silanization reaction with ?-aminopropyltriethoxysilane
(?-APS) in aqueous solution at different pH values
Application
-
Magnesium hydroxide used
as a clarifier (a substance that removes impurities) in the refining of
sugar.
-
It also used as an
additive in the treatment of wastewater to neutralize acids present in
the wastes.
-
Magnesium hydroxide acts
as a drying agent in some food products.
-
It used as a flame
retardant coating on fabrics and other materials used by consumers and
industries.
-
The major use of
magnesium hydroxide is as an antacid for stomach upsets.
Technology
-
The chemical compositions
of the brucite and Ca(OH)2 gel were determined using standard wet
chemical techniques. A sedimentation
technique was used to remove CaCO 3 contaminants from the brucite phase.
-
A new multielement
masking technique using magnesium hydroxide coprecipitation applied for
the selective determination of Pb by differential pulse anodic stripping
voltammetry (DPASV).
