The lubricating
oils used by vehicle engines have to be replaced at least every
20 000 km.
-
This oil used to
be dumped, but now most of it is re-refined and reused. This is
done in a three step process, in which water, solids, lighter
oils, dissolved metals, degraded additives etc. are removed.
-
Three steps
include: Dehydration, Diesel stripping, Lube oil distillation
and condensation.
-
Solvent
extraction has been known as one of the potential techniques for
recycling used lubricating oil.
-
The solvents used were liquefied petroleum gas
(LPG) condensate and stabilized condensate.
-
The extraction process using stabilized
condensate demonstrated characteristics that make it competitive
with existing used oil treatment technologies.
-
The main products
of re-refining are diesel fuel, high and low quality lubricants
and heavy fuel oils used in industrial burners.
-
The basic
equipment costs of recycling used lubricating oil as a diesel
fuel supplement are $8,500 to $10,000, and the total capital
investment ranges from $57,000 to $80,000.
-
If the oil is
re-refined into lubricating oil for vehicular use, a net savings
of $1.50 per gallon could be realized.
