General
  • Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) is stored in your gas bottle (Cylinder) as a liquid.When the cylinder valve is opened some of the liquid boils off as a vapour.
  • LPG cylinders come in several sizes – 9kg, 19kg, 48g and a 19kg for fork-lift trucks.

Process

  • The process of building LPG cylinders is fully automated from raw materials to the  finished product.
  • Cylinders shall be moved only on a hand truck or other cart designed for handling gas cylinders.
  • All storage rooms that contain in excess of 2000 cubic feet of oxygen and/or nitrous oxide shall be vented to the outside.

Application

  • They have become important energy sources in many industrial areas, such as civil engineering,gastronomy, tourist industry and agriculture
  • Applications for gas cylinders include Pneumatic reservoirs in transport and industry,Storage of medical gases,Storage of breathing gases in diving cylinder, Storage of gaseous fuels for internal combustion engines, heating equipment and cooking such as LP gas, buttane and propane.

Market

  • The average growth rate in demand has been around 12% annually. There are around 40 million LPG customers.
  • The last decade has seen the LPG price rising from US$90 per tonne to a historical high of US$345 per metric tonne.
  • Gross and net unit margins on LPG sales have typically been higher than in other large markets such as Germany, UK, Italy, or Spain.
  • Approximately 300,000 tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is manufactured and sold in South Africa each year, generating a turnover of about R1,5 bn.

Report

  • The LPG cylinders approved by the LTSA are liquid withdrawal cylinders that feed Liquid LPG to the LPG regulator system where it is vapourised and then fed to the LPG mixer on the engine.
  • Any party can import LPG after paying applicable government dues. However, for the handling of LPG a license will be obtained from OGRA.
  • Separate agencies should be set up for supply of LPG to domestic consumers and commercial users.
