General
- Lipoic acid is an
antioxidant found in certain foods, including red meat, spinach, broccoli,
potatoes, yams, carrots, beets, and yeast. It is also made in small
amounts in the human body.
- Lipoic acid plays an
important role in metabolism. Recent research has shown that it is
beneficial in treating nerve damage in diabetics. It is an antioxidant
that is promoted to protect the body against cancer and other diseases.
Production
-
Fatty acid and lipoic acid
biosynthesis were investigated in plant mitochondria. Although the
mitochondria lack acetyl-CoA carboxylase, experiments reveal that
they contain the enzymatic equipment necessary to transform malonate into
the two main building units for fatty acid synthesis: malonyl- and
acetyl-acyl carrier protein (ACP).
-
Alpha-lipoic acid protects mitochondria by removing free radicals and
improves the recycling of other antioxidants. Carnitine is more potent in
restoring mitochondrial energy production. Thus the combination is
complementary.
Application
Market
- Japan has also recently
approved alpha-lipoic acid as a food, a development that is likely to
further boost the current double-digit growth in the antioxidant.
- Degussa produces
alpha-lipoic acid, marketed as Alipure, under a patented chemical
synthesis process. The new formula will be produced, without solvents, in
Wacker's cyclodextrins plant in Eddyville in the US.
- Degussa is also
planning to offer its Alipure product in a liquid formulation for
beverages and soft gels, probably by the end of the first quarter. Early
trials on this version suggest that it offers improved bioavailability
over standard alpha-lipoic acid.
Report
- Alpha-lipoic acid has
been described in scientific publications as the “ideal,” “universal,” and
“metabolic” antioxidant. At high doses, alpha-lipoic acid helps maintain
normal blood sugar balance in certain populations, and it also helps
protect the liver and other tissues.
- Degussa's new
alpha-lipoic acid has been microencapsulated on a molecular level with
alpha-cyclodextrin produced by chemicals group Wacker, giving it a
much-improved shelf life and taste.
