General
- Kratom (Mitragyna
speciosa) is a medicinal leaf harvested from a large tree native to
Southeast Asia in the Rubiaceae, first documented by Dutch colonial
botanist Korthals. It is botanically related to the Corynanthe, Cinchona
and Uncaria genera and shares some similar biochemistry. It is in the same
family as coffee, and the psychoactive plant Psychotria viridis.
Other species in the Mitragyna genus are used medicinally in Africa, and
also used for their wood.
- Kratom contains many
alkaloids including mitragynine , mitraphylline, and 7-hydroxymitragynine
. Kratom has many potential medicinal uses, for example as a low grade
analgesic comparable to codeine or propoxyphene, as an alternative to
methadone, and as a source of other chemicals with a wide range of
beneficial activities which could be isolated from the psychoactive
constituents.
Growth &
Cultivation
- Kratom refers to the plant
Mitragyna speciosa
Korth., a tree indigenous to
Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. In Thailand, kratom is mostly grown in the central
and southern regions of the country, and only rarely in the north. The
Mitragyna genus, part of the family
Rubiaceae, is found in tropical and sub-tropical regions of Asia and Africa.
Botanically and chemically, kratom is closely related to yohimbe. Other relatives include
cat's claw, with which it shares several active chemicals, coffee and
cinchona
- Mitragyna speciosa is a beautiful,
hardy, and extremely tall tree, sometimes reaching heights of 300 meters!
The seeds produced by these trees couldn't be more delicate; they grow in
podheads, that contain about 50 seed pods per head, and each pod can
contain about 50 seeds. The seeds are no larger than a sliver. Because the
seeds are so delicate and so many, they also have a low germination rate
as well.
Production
- The traditional usage of Kratom is only known
from Thailand and Malaysia. In Thailand it has been used since hundreds
of years as a substitute for opium. Thai workers use it to get through a
hard day of work. There are some reports from the nineteenth century
which also mention traditional usage in Malaysia. Pharmacological
studies of the main active constituent (mitragynine) began soon
thereafter.
-
Super Indo Kratom from Indonesia is our newest offering and is
the highest-quality. It is finely powdered and is about 25% more potent
smelling than the Thailand strain.
-
Kratom is a controlled
substance in Thailand, Australia, Malaysia and Myanmar (Burma). A
handful of people in Malaysia and possibly other countries are lobbying
their governments to allow medical research into kratom as a potential
prescription substance.
Application
-
In
addition to being used as a narcotic drug in its own right, it is often
used as a substitute for opium when opium is unavailable, or to moderate
opium addiction.
-
In folk
medicine, it is often used to treat diarrhea. A small minority of users
use kratom to prolong sexual intercourse.
-
The most
dominant one in kratom is mitraphylline, which has shown activity as a
vasodilator and lowers blood pressure.
-
One study
has shown that it increases memory retention performance in animals
treated with amnesic drugs. It also acts as a diuretic
Market
Due its (rising)
popularity Kratom is widely available these days, mainly through the
internet. There are 2 kinds of Kratom available on the market today; one
finds it origin in Bali, Indonesia and the other originates from
Thailand. They are both the same plant, Mitragyna speciosa, but when
consumed they do have a little bit a different effect on the mind.
Report
- Buprenorphine or kratom is most
commonly utilized in replacement therapy as methadone carries a stigma
of being a drug for "junkies".
-
If the narcotics which constitute the corpus deficit
is Kratom plant (Mitragyna speciosa), the offender shall be liable to
imprisonment not exceeding two years and to a fine not exceeding two
hundred thousand baht.
