General
- Iron ores
are rocks and minerals from which metallic iron can be economically
extracted.
- The ores
are usually rich in iron oxides and vary in colour from dark grey,
bright yellow, deep purple, to rusty red.
- Pure iron
is virtually unknown on the surface of the Earth except as Fe-Ni alloys
from meteorites and very rare forms of deep mantle xenoliths.
Process
- A Dry/Wet
Screening plant carries out the processing of crude iron ore.
- The dry
process separates the ore by its size and the wet process uses water to
beneficiate the sub-grade ore as well as segregate it to the required
factions.
- The
sub-grade ore is submitted to scrubbing, wet screening, classification
and hydro-cloning.
- This
process concentrates the iron ore by the size of its particles and
removes impurities like Silica and Alumina, as tailings.
Market
- Many high
cost operations have emerged to fulfill the iron ore demand from China’s
steel sector.
- Domestic
producers are highly fragmented, no high quality reserves and increasing
environmental issues emerging.
- Australia
still the cheapest iron ore, even after the 71.5% FOB price increase.
Report
- The
government is torn between its conflicting intentions to conserve the
iron ore deposits for the domestic industry and to export them to
international buyers should not be an alibi for adopting a faulty policy
paradigm.
- The iron
ore mining sector in Bellary district in Karnataka and the expanding web
of illegal and corrupt practices that sustains it are finally to be
brought under official scrutiny.
