General
-
Granite is a common and
widely occurring type of
intrusive, felsic, igneous rock.
Granites are usually medium to
coarsely crystalline,
occasionally with some
individual crystals larger than
the groundmass forming a rock
known as porphyry. Granites can
be pink to dark gray or even
black, depending on their
chemistry and mineralogy.
Outcrops of granite tend to form
tors, and rounded massifs.
Granites sometimes occur in
circular depressions surrounded
by a range of hills, formed by
the metamorphic aureole or
hornfels.
-
Granite is an igneous rock and
is formed from magma. Granite
magma has many potential origins
but it must intrude other rocks.
Most granite intrusions are
emplaced at depth within the
crust, usually greater than
1.5 km and up to 50 km depth
within thick continental crust.
The origin of granite is
contentious and has led to
varied schemes of
classification.
Process
- There are,
four operations that are involved in the processing of granite.
They are: Dressing , Cutting/Sawing , Surface Grinding and
Polishing , Edge-Cutting-Trimming.
- Granite
can be a given a variety of finishes by honing and polishing,
bush hammering or flaming, each producing differing textures and
colour effects. Honing and polishing is achieved by using a
series of abrasive grinding discs graded from coarse to fine.
Various types of machines are used, the older types in which the
discs are changed or the stone moved manually from one to the
next, and the newer ones in which the stone is automatically
moved from one set of discs to the next.
Market
- Finland is
one of the major exporters of granite and a world-leader in
soapstone production. The annual turnover of the industry is
approx. 200 million Euro, divided equally between soapstone and
granite products. The value of export is approx. 40% of the
turnover. Approx. 200 actively operating companies are found in
the line of natural stone business in Finland, employing approx.
2000 persons (with spin-off approx. 3000 persons).
-
India is one of the leading countries in the production and
export of granite and other stones. India's share of export of
processed granite products (value added) has increased from 10%
in the year 1985-86 to 70% in the year 1999-2000, as against
granite dimensional blocks. Granite industry in India has been
quite successful in exports.
Application
- The
typical Applications Granite is used as a building stone,
architectural aggregate, track & trail pathways, decorative
landscape stone, decorative rip rap stone, and a source of
economically valuable minerals. Granite Floorings , Granite
Furniture , Granite Counter Tops , Granite Monument , Granite
Table Tops , Granite Steps.
-
Granite aggregate is mainly used for road construction and
maintenance, however there are many other uses which include
concrete, landscaping stone and paving. Granite is a very
durable stone and is used in a variety of ways. Its attractive
appearance makes it useful as an architectural stone
