• Per capita consumption of fresh produce increased; Consumers, responding in part to increased health concerns, are demanding year round supplies of fresh produce such as grapes and strawberries.  

• India is the world's second largest producer of fruits & vegetables

• It has large marine product and processing potential with varied fish resources

• India is the largest milk producer in the world.

• FAO’s forecast for world cereal utilization has been raised to  20 million tonnes  reflecting the
  indications of much higher supplies than anticipated earlier.

• Global sugar consumption is estimated by FAO to increase by 1.6 million tonnes.

• Total imports by EU member countries of fresh fruit amounted to more than € 14.4 billion, representing an increase of 9 percent.

• A total of nearly €22.3 billion of fresh fruit and vegetables was imported by EU member countries.
