General

  • Ethylenediamine is the organic compound with the formula C2H4(NH2)2.

  • This colorless liquid with an ammonia-like odor is a strongly basic amine.

  • Ethylenediamine(1,2-ethanediamine) is the lowest molecular weight ethyleneamine.

  • It contains two primary nitrogens. EDA is a single-component product that is clear and colorless, with an ammonia-like odor.

  • Ethylene diamine is a strongly alkaline, colorless to yellowish liquid, with ammonia-like odor, completely miscible with water and soluble in alcohol. 

Process and Applications

  • Ethylenediamine is manufactured by reacting ammonia and 1,2-dichloroethane. The reaction yields the mixture of ethylenediamine and the linear polyamines.

  • EDA (ethylenediamine) is mainly used as an intermediate in the manufacture of fungicides for agriculture, in the production of chelating agents, and as a low-temperature bleaching activator in washing powders.

  • It is also used in a multitude of other applications, including lubricants for plastics processing, polyamides, textile resins and fuel additives.

  • It is extensively used in the production of polymeric compounds, pharmaceuticals, dyestuffs and pesticides.

Market

  • The capacity of ethylenediamine in the world was around 150 000 t/a and the consumption was around 140 000 tons, the supply and the demand being basically balanced.

  • China has more than 10 ethylenediamine producers today.
