General
- Coumarin is
a chemical compound ; a toxin found in many plants, notably in high
concentration in the tonka bean, vanilla grass, woodruff, mullein, and
bison grass.
- Coumarin
has blood-thinning, anti-fungicidal and anti-tumor activities.
Process
-
The biosynthesis of coumarin in plants is via hydroxylation, glycolysis
and cyclization of cinnamic acid.
-
Coumarin can be prepared in a laboratory in a Perkin reaction between
salicylaldehyde and acetic anhydride.
Technology
- The host–guest complex of C-methyl
resorcin[4]arene with coumarin and thiocoumarin has been characterized
by single crystal X-ray diffraction technique.
- New orange fluorescent dyes based on
coumarin, which has high fluorescence yield and chemical stability, have
been synthesized.
Application
- Synthetic coumarin is used in cosmetics, It
smells of fresh hay.
- Coumarin is also used for medicinal
purposes to treat oedemas.
- Isolated coumarin may not be added to
foods.
