Introduction
- Cement is
a fine, soft, powdery-type substance.
- In the
most general sense of the word, a cement is a binder, a
substance which sets and hardens independently, and can bind
other materials together.
Process and Technology
- In
cement production, raw materials preparation involves
primary and secondary crushing of the quarried material,
drying the material (for use in the dry process) or
undertaking a further raw grinding through either wet or dry
processes, and blending the materials.
- A
cement plant consumes 3,000 to 6,500 MJ of fuel per tonne of
clinker produced, depending on the raw materials and the
process used.
- It is
made from a mixture of elements that are found in natural
materials such as limestone, clay, sand and/or shale.
-
At present ninety three per cent of the
total capacity in the industry is based on modern and
environment-friendly dry process technology and only seven
per cent of the capacity is based on old wet and semi-dry
process technology.
Market
-
For India, the world's second largest producer of
cement, the recent boom in infrastructure and the
housing market has only boosted its cement industry.
-
The cement industry is experiencing a boom on account of
the overall growth of the Indian economy.
-
The demand for cement,
being a derived demand, depends primarily on the
industrial activity, real estate business, construction
activity, and investment in the infrastructure sector.
