Introduction
- Carbon black is a
material, today usually produced by the incomplete combustion of
petroleum products.
- Carbon black is a form of
amorphous carbon that has an extremely high surface area to
volume ratio, and as such it is one of the first nanomaterials
to find common use.
- Carbon black is one of the
major reinforcing agent imparts greater stiffness and higher
ultimate tensile strength.
- Carbon blacks are
characterized by the size distribution of the primary particles
and the degree of their aggregation and agglomeration.
Manufacturing Process
- Carbon black is a
commercial product manufactured by thermal decomposition,
including detonation, or by incomplete combustion of carbon
hydrogen compounds and has a well-defined morphology with a
minimum content of tars or other extraneous materials.
- Carbon black is
produced with the thermal decomposition method or the
partial combustion method using hydrocarbons such as oil or
natural gas as raw material.
- The majority of
industrial Carbon Black manufacture is based on the process
of continuous imperfect combustion of Carbon Black oils,
such as fluidized catalytic cracking decant oil and coal
tar, using reactors.
- The various machinery
required for producing carbon black are jaw crushers, Hammer
mill, Reactors, Air Blowers, Electrostatic Precipitator,
Conveyor Belts, Flow Meters, Recorders, Hoist, Pumps,
Pelletiser, Fans, Balances etc.
Uses
- The most common
use of carbon black is as a pigment and reinforcing
phase in automobile tires.
- Carbon black is
used mainly as a reinforcing material in the rubber
industry. Other user areas include inks, paints, plastic
and paper.
- The present
production of Carbon Black is about 1,28,600 MTA against
an installed capacity (based on indigenous carbon black
feed-stock) of 2/13,200 MTA.
- Carbon black is
also extensively used as colorant in coating, ink,
plastic product and building sectors. Besides, carbon
black is also used as raw material for electric cells
and radio components.
Market
-
Steady demand from key end-user
industries continues to provide sustainable business
options for active carbon black manufacturers.
-
Growth in automobile demand and
the subsequent increase in tyre manufacturing
provide reasonable scope for increase in volume
consumption, while speciality applications are
likely to yield higher profit margins.
-
Carbon black remains one of the
most important pigment materials today, fulfilling
the role of an active functional filler or
reinforcement material, reducing the stickiness and
enhancing the physical properties of rubber.
