- Carbon
credits are a key component of national and international
emissions trading schemes that have been implemented to mitigate
global warming.
- Carbon
credits are measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide. 1 credit = 1
tonne of CO2. Imagine 1 tonne of CO2 would
fill a swimming pool the size of 10 by 25 metres and 2 metres
deep.
- The
current prices of credit ranges from Euro 6 to Euro 12 per tonne
of Co2. In 2004, 107 million tonne of Co2 were exchanges through
green projects, a 38% rise from 2003. And considering the steep
penalty for default at Euro 40 per tonne, the volumes can only
rise.
- India’s
carbon credit market is growing, as many players (industries)
are adopting the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
- The
revenue size of the global carbon credit market was about 5
billion euros in the year 2006 and ramped up to 40 billion euros
last year.
- India at
present holds nearly 43 percent (28 million tonnes) of the
certified carbon credits issued so far by the CDM executive
board. The country is also actively participating in CDM
projects.
-
India is the global market leader having already generated 29
million carbon credits and has another 139 million in the
pipeline for sale.
- The
largest single market for carbon was traded under the European
Trading Scheme (ETS), in which certain polluting industries such
as energy and cement firms face a limit on the emissions they
can produce.
- Credits
may also be retired, meaning taken off the market. They can
donated to non-profit groups and are tax deductible in countries
where trading is taking place.
