General
  • Barium carbonate (BaCO3), also known as witherite, is a chemical compound used in rat poison, bricks and cement
  • Barium carbonate powder is dense and white and is manufactured either from the mineral barite (BaSO4) or from barium chloride.

  • Barium is a dense alkaline earth metal that occurs naturally in ore deposits and makes up 0.05% of the Earth's crust. Barium and its compounds may be found in nature or produced industrially for various uses.

Technology

  • Titanium dioxide and barium carbonate powders supplied and milled by Ferro Corp, using their proprietary methods, were loaded in to alumina or mullite saggers. Scale-up runs using 100 g, 250 g, and 1 Kg were calcined in a microwave assist electric kiln.

  • The presence of calcium hydroxide indicates that the treatment with barium hydroxide converts the non-binder calcium carbonate into new and 'fresh' calcium hydroxide. The original binder is formed in situ and begins a slow setting process - called carbonation. Nanoparticles treatment is the logical evolution of the Ferroni-Dini method, and can replace it in most cases with some advantages.

Application

  • Barium Carbonate is used as an ingredient of optical glass, porcelain enamel frit and ceramic glazes.

  • Barium and its compounds are used in oil and gas drilling muds, automotive paints, stabilizers for plastics, case hardening steels, bricks, tiles, lubricating oils, and jet fuel as well as in various types of pesticides

  • It is used in the manufacture of various barium compounds including Barium Nitrate, Barium Oxide, Barium Hydrate, Barium Chromate, Barium Peroxide and Barium Titanate.

  • It is also used by the chemical industry in removing sulfuric acid from liquids.

  • The Commission found barium chloride and barium carbonate to be separate like products and made an affirmative preliminary determination regarding each product.
