- Atenolol is
a ß1 receptor specific antagonist, a drug belonging to the group
of ß-blockers, a class of drugs used primarily in cardiovascular
diseases.
- Atenolol was
developed as a replacement for propranolol in the treatment of
hypertension.
- The chemical
works by slowing down the heart and reducing its workload.
- Atenolol
does not pass through the blood-brain barrier thus avoiding
various CNS side effects.
- Atenolol
causes significantly fewer central nervous system side effects and
fewer bronchospastic reactions, both due to its particular
pharmacologic profile.
- If atenolol
alone fails to control arterial hypertension, the drug can be
combined with a diuretic or a vasodilator.
- Atenolol is
a member of a class of drugs known as beta-blockers.
- Atenolol
nanoparticles were prepared successfully by DESE technique using
EC and PVA.
- Atenolol
acts to inhibit the action of adrenaline on the heart and thereby
slows the heart and lowers blood pressure.
- Therapeutic
doses may produce side effects such as dizziness, muscular
fatigue, coldness of the fingers and toes, and difficulty in
breathing, and/or aggravation of asthma.
- A HPLC
system using RP -C18 column and fluorescence detector was used to
assess atenolol in plasma.
- DESE method
involves the dispersion of the aqueous solution of atenolol in a
solution of ethylcellulose in dichloromethane.
