General
- Artemisia is a
large, diverse genus of plants with about 180 species belonging to
the daisy family (Asteraceae).
- They grow in
temperate climates of the Northern Hemisphere, usually in dry or
semi-dry habitats.
- It contains many
well known species, such as Roman wormwood, Sagebrush, Tarragon,
Mugwort, and Southernwood.
- ARTEMISIA
annua (known as ‘quinghao’ in China) is an aromatic annual herb
endemic to the northern parts of Chahar and Suiyuan provinces in
China.
Cultivation
& Harvesting
- WHO is working
with partners to stimulate local production and extraction of
artemisinin from Artemisia annua in Kenya and Tanzania.
- Higher
artemisinin content well before flower bud formation was not
expected and a further examination of seasonal changes in
artemisinin accumulation is needed.
- To investigate
the possible effect of water stress on the accumulation of
artemisinin, four different water stress treatments were
investigated.
- The amorphane
sesquiterpene artemisinin is naturally formed in the shoot of
Artemisia annua plant
Application
& Technology
- Artemisia
species, growing in almost all the northern hemisphere, is used in
folk medicine of some countries as a remedy for hypertension.
- An alkaloid of
Artemisia which was metabolized to small molecules in digestive
tract and then could pass through the blood-brain barrier, appeared
to be an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor with a blocker of
neurotoxicity induced by beta amyloid in human brain causing
Alzheimer’s disease
- Postharvest
handling of artemisia plants could affect artemisinin content, six
drying techniques over different time periods were examined to
identify the best drying method. Drying method and duration had
highly significant effects on leaf moisture.
Market
- Armenia is a
small mountainous country on the Armenian Plateau in the South of
the Caucasus between the Black and Caspian Seas. Owing to
anthropogenic influence the sources of some medicinal plants
(especially growing on disturbed lands - Tussilago farfara, Urtica
dioica, and Artemisia absinthium) have recently increased in
Armenia.
- All the
production of aromatic plants including Artemisia in Israel is done
in greenhouses to ensure the production of high quality products
year round. Heating, cooling and supplementary light may be employed
according to the season and the crop needs.
