Glycerol Glycerol is a chemical compound with the formula HOCH2CH(OH)CH2OH. This colorless, odorless, viscous liquid is widely used in pharmaceutical formulations. With many names (see Table), it is a sugar alcohol and fittingly is sweet-tasting and of low toxicity. Glycerol has three hydrophilic alcoholic hydroxyl groups that are responsible for its solubility in water and its hygroscopic nature. Its surface tension is 64.00 @ 20 °C in mN/m and it has a temperature coefficient of -0.0598 mN/(m K). It is a central component of lipids.
Alkyd resin Alkyd coatings are a class of polyester coatings derived from the reaction of an alcohol (alkohol) and an acid or acid anhydride hence the term alk-yd from "alcohol and acid or anhydride]" and are the dominant resin or "binder" in most "oil-based" coatings sold to the consumer market. Alkyd coatings today are typically manufactured from acid anhydrides such as phthalic anhydride or maleic anhydride and polyols such as glycerine or pentaerythritol and are modified with unsaturated fatty acids (from plant and vegetable oils) to give them air drying properties. The unsaturated oils react with oxygen from the air which cause the oils to polymerize or crosslink with each other.

Alkyd resins derived from the glycolised PET Diethylene glycol (DEG) is used for the depolymerization of PET in several molar ratios. The oligomers obtained are analyzed and identified. Furthermore, its potential use as raw materials in the production of secondary, specialized products, such as alkyd resins used as enamel paints or coatings is investigated.
Technical advances in the manufacture of resins The common method for monitoring product viscosity and acid number is for an operator to draw samples from the reactor at regular intervals. The operator then sends these samples to the laboratory for analysis. After receiving an analytical result that matches the value specified in the operating procedures, the operator proceeds to the next processing step. The analytical results are usually available approximately 15 - 30 minutes after sampling. Because the reaction continues during this time interval, the analytical results are not representative of the actual product inside the reactor. Because this method of "intermittent reaction monitoring" is inconsistent, the produced resins vary significantly between batches.
Plasma spray process of coating The Plasma Spray Process is basically the spraying of molten or heat softened material onto a surface to provide a coating. Material in the form of powder is injected into a very high temperature plasma flame, where it is rapidly heated and accelerated to a high velocity. The hot material impacts on the substrate surface and rapidly cools forming a coating. This plasma spray process carried out correctly is called a "cold process" (relative to the substrate material being coated) as the substrate temperature can be kept low during processing avoiding damage, metallurgical changes and distortion to the substrate material.
Types and Properties
Acrylic modified alkyds Acrylic Modified Alkyd Resins are medium to short oil length alkyds copolymerized with acrylic monomers. The acrylic modification enhances gloss and exterior durability. It also speeds dry and improves the hardness of the dry film.
Long oil alkyd resins Long oil alkyds are characterized by having an oil content greater than 55%. They are used extensively for interior and exterior architectural finishes, deck coatings, and chalk adhesion modifiers for latex paint. The high oil content helps give a smooth brushing action. These resins are infinately soluble in aliphalic type solvents. Some high solids systems may be cut in aromatic or oxygenated solvent systems.
Short oil alkyd resins Short oil alkyds are characterized by having less than 40% oil content. These types of resins are usually cut in aromatic or oxygenated solvents and have very limited compatibility with aliphatic solvents. Short oil alkyds are almost exclusively used for industrial finishes. Most short oil alkyds can be crosslinked with melamine or urea resins via the alkyd hydroxyl functionality.
Medium oil alkyd resins

Medium oil alkyds are typically modified with 40-55% oil content. They are faster drying than the long oil alkyds. Typical solvent systems for these products are the alipahtic solvents. Some may be cut in aromatics or oxygenated solvents for high solids. Most will accept infinite dilution with aliphatic solvents.

Modified alkyd resins

Modified Alkyd Resins are short to medium oil length alkyds modified with rosin and/or phenolic resins. These modifications speed up the rate of air dry and improve the hardness of the dry film. Phenolic modification also enhances adhesion of the alkyd and imparts some solvent resistance to the alkyd film. These products are intended for use in primers and non-white finishes.

Saturated polyester resins

Saturated Polyester Resins are oil free non-oxidizing alkyd resins. These resins are intended to be crosslinked with amino resins through their free hydroxyl functionality. Crosslinking can be done with reactive urethane resins as well as with melamines and urea resins. Depending upon how they are formulated, curing can be done at room temperature or at very high temperatures for high speed lines. When properly formulated, these resins can give very high quality industrial finishes.

Silicone modified alkyds

Silicone Modified Alkyd Resins are short, medium, and long oil alkyd resins which are modified with silicone intermediates to impart special properties to the resin. The silicone modification gives finishes with outstanding gloss retention, enhanced exterior durability, and heat resistance. Depending upon the oil length of the alkyd, a wide variety of useful finishes can be formulated with these products.

VT/Styrenated alkyds

VT/Styrenated Alkyd Resins are made up of alkyds or drying oils which are copolymerized with vinyl toluene. This modification gives the resins a rapid lacquer type dry and fast film hardness development.

Water reducible alkyd resins

Water Reducible Resins are normally high acidity medium to short oil alkyd resins supplied in water soluble coupling solvents. These resins require neutralization of the built in acid groups and additional cosolvent before water can be added. These resins are versatile components for formulating industrial finishes. The performance of these resins can meet or exceed those of the solventborne finishes and at lower VOC levels.

Effect of modification with nitrocellulose and phenol formaldehyde resins Three alkyd samples each of 50% oil length were prepared with phthalic anhydride, glycerol and crude rubber seed oil (I), refined rubber seed oil (II) and methyl esters of rubber seed oil (III) employing the alcoholysis method. All the alkyds were processed to acid value below 10 mg KOH/g. The alkyd samples were blended with nitrocellulose and phenol formaldehyde resins in different proportions. The performance of the blends in terms of drying schedule, chemical resistance and pencil hardness was determined. The blends were observed to show improved properties to a substitution level of 40% rubber seed oil alkyd in the blend. The resistance of the blends to different service media was found to be better than the rubber seed oil based alkyd resins.
Effects of alkyd/melamine resin ratio and curing temperature on the properties of the coatings Synthetic resins are used as binders in protective coatings. An alkyd/melamine resin mixture is the usual composition for the preparation of a coating called  “baking enamel” cured through functional groups of resins. The effects of the alkyd/butylated melamine resin ratio (from 85/15 to 70/30) and curing temperature (from 100 °C to 160 °C) on the crosslinking and properties of the coating are presented in this paper. The degree of curing was determined by differential scanning calorimetry. These data were used for the estimation of the degree of crosslinking. The hardness, elasticity, impact resistance, degree of adherence and gloss were also determined. Optimal coating properties could be achieved with an alkyd/melamine resin ratio of 75/25, a curing temperature of 130 °C and a curing time of 30 min.

Alkyds The invention provides novel water- dispersible air-drying alkyds containing 1.25-3.75% by weight of polyalkylene oxide radicals, in particular polyethylene glycol, and novel aqueous dispersions of these alkyds which can be worked into water-based paints having a glossy finish.
Alkyd resin Al least a part of the polybasic acid component of an alkyd resin comprises the reaction product of an olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon resin, e.g. derived from pyrolysis gasoline, with an alpha, beta olefinically unsaturated monobasic acid, dibasic acid or a derivative thereof such as maleic anhydride.
Alkyd resins An air-drying alkyd resin comprising at least one alpha, beta olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid unit or a mixture thereof with a polycarboxylic acid unit being free from polymerizable olefinic an acetylenic bonds, said units bound as an ester, at least one trihydric alcohol unit or a combination thereof with a minor amount of a dihydric alcohol unit, from 10 to 35% by weight of cyclopentadiene units and at least one predominantly aliphatic monocarboxylic acid unit.
Acrylate- modified alkyd resin An acrylate modified alkyd resin obtained by the process consisting of the steps (a) forming an alkyd resin by reacting a conjugated fatty acid and an aromatic dicarboxylic acid or anhydride, and dimethylolpropionic acid with an excess of alcohol, and (b) reacting the alkyd so formed with an alkyl-substituted or un-substituted acrylic acid or ester thereof or mixture thereof.
Alkyd resin emulsion An aqueous emulsion of an alkyd resin which contains as an emulsifier at least one branched primary alcohol alkoxylate of the formula: [CH3.(CH2)n][CH3.(CH2)m].CH.[(CH2)p.O.(AO)q.H]. The alkyd emulsion is particularly suitable for use as a waterborne paint or surface coating composition.
Alkyd resin cure modifiers In high solids alkyd resin coatings the blend of 10 to 50 weight percent of unsaturated polyester or unsaturated polyester urethane cure modifiers improves the cure, hardness, gloss and film properties of alkyd acrylic resins adapted to cure by oxidative methods.
Polyurethane-modified alkyd resin A polyurethane-modified alkyd resin obtained by the process consisting of the steps (a) forming an alkyd resin by reacting an unsaturated fatty acid and an aromatic dicarboxylic acid or anhydride, and dimethylolpropionic acid with an excess of polyol, and (b) reacting the alkyd so formed with toluene diisocyanate.

The alkyd resin is prepared by reacting at least onemonoglyceride, a polycarboxulic acid, and a polyol sulfomonomer adduct containing at least one sulfonate group. Quantitative determination of the distribution of free hydroxylic and carboxylic groups in  alkyd resins Quantitative 31P-NMR spectroscopy is used to measure the hydroxyl and carboxyl content of some polyester resins (short- and long-oil alkyds, polyols, polyesters) through derivatization of the —OH protons with 2-chloro-4,4,5,5-tetramethyldioxaphospholane I. This methodology is shown to be superior to titration methods, since it can (a) discriminate between primary and secondary hydroxyl groups, (b) identify individual alcohols and acids present, (c) measure the amount of free fatty acids in oil-modified alkyds, and (d) provide lower limits for the number-averaged molecular weight of the resins and exact values for linear polyesters.
Characterization of alkyd resins using NMR spectroscopy One- (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) 1Hand 13C-NMR spectroscopy was used to characterize polyester and alkyd resins used in the coatings industry. The wealth of chemical composition information of the 1H- and 13C-NMR 1D spectra of the resins is revealed through 2D NMR experiments that spread chemical shifts in two dimensions, thus facilitating the peak assignment of the various components of the resins. It is shown that the types of polyols, acids, and vegetable oils used to modify the resins can be efficiently traced by NMR spectroscopic techniques. Information on the quantitative composition of the resins and especially the abundance of unsaturated fatty acid double bonds, which influences resin dryability and hardness, can be easily extracted from the 1H-NMR spectra upon successful assignment.
