General
- Activated carbon,
also called activated charcoal or activated coal, is a general term
which covers carbon material mostly derived from charcoal.
- Activated carbon is
one of the most effective absorbents. Activated carbon is carbon which
has a positive charge added to it, which makes it much more effective at
absorbing impurities and chemicals
Production
Process
- Activated carbon is
the tradename for highly porous products, made of carbonaceous raw
materials, with a large internal surface of 400-1600 m2/g and
a large pore volume of more than 30 cm3/100 g.
- Steam activation and
chemical activation are the two commonly used processes for the
manufacture of activated carbon.
- Activated carbon is a
non-graphite form of carbon which could be produced from any
carbonaceous material such as coal, lignite, wood, paddy husk, coir
pith, coconut shell, etc.
- Activated Carbon from
coconut shells, a by-product of copra processing, is a good material for
activated carbon/charcoal production.
-
Chemical activation is generally used for the production of activated
carbon from sawdust, wood or peat and uses chemicals for activation.
Applications
-
Activated carbon
removes organic pollutants, some of which discolor the water with a
yellowish tint, organic acids, proteins, hormones, antibiotic compounds,
and organic compounds as well as a variety of chemicals, medications,
metals, and minerals.
-
Activated
charcoal or carbon filters are the most widely marketed home water
treatment device. They are used to remove unwanted tastes, odors and
organic compounds from drinking water.
-
An activated
carbon filter is used most frequently for annoyance problems.
Technology
- Liquid phase carbon
adsorption is a full-scale technology in which ground water is pumped
through one or more vessels containing activated carbon to which
dissolved organic contaminants adsorb.
- The ACF made by
Taiwan Carbon Technology is a high performance activated carbon existing
in the form of woven fibres, not the impregnated into cloth and / or
coated with granular activated carbon.
Market
- Worldwide demand for
virgin activated carbon is forecast to rise 5.0 percent per year through
2010 to 1.2 million metric tons. China will increase its share of the
global activated carbon market to around 13 percent in 2010.
- The average price per
pound of activated carbon is forecast to rise 1.9 percent per year to 91
cents.
- Higher priced
granular activated carbon (GAC) products are forecast to have healthy
long-term growth, and this will continue to drive gains in the value of
total demand.
