- The HVAC system -
heating, ventilating, and air conditioning in workplace is all about
making heat, distributing it and controlling it.
- HVAC is sometimes
referred to as climate control because it provides heating, cooling,
humidity control, filtration, fresh air, building pressure control, and
comfort control.
- There are many types
of HVAC systems. These types of HVAC systems can be classified into
broadly three main types of HVAC systems:
a) Centralized Ducted Air Systems,8 which include Dual Duct systems,
Constant or Variable Air Volume Systems.
b) Centralized Fluid Based Systems,9 which include Fan-coil systems,
Hydronic systems, Variable Refrigerant Volume systems (VRV).
c) Decentralized Systems,10 which include split systems and evaporative
coolers. - HVAC filters remove
airborne
contaminants and, if filters have low initial pressure drop, the amount
of energy to operate the HVAC system is reduced
- HVAC filters work by
providing a physical barrier between the air intake and the moving parts
of the HVAC system. As air is drawn in, particulates are caught by the
filter and prevented from entering while the air is allowed to pass
through. Some HVAC systems have a filter at the air intake and also at
the air exhaust, further preventing any pollutants from being blown back
into the interior environment.
- The filters are
available currently
with Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) ratings
of 14 (>90%), 15 (>95%) and 16 (>98%). -
Air cleaners are usually
classified by the method employed for removing particles of various
sizes from the air. There are three general types of air cleaners on the
market: mechanical filters, electronic air cleaners, and ion generators.
Hybrid units, using two or more of these removal methods, are also
available. Air cleaners may be in-duct units (installed in the central
heating and/or air-conditioning system) or stand-alone portable units
- Filter efficiency
is found by the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV), which is a
scale from 0 to 20. A higher MERV rating means the filter will remove
smaller particles from the airstreams. Pleated media filters with a MERV
rating between 6 and 12 should adequately protect the coil and provide
indoor air quality benefits.
