Information
- Datura
stramonium also called dhatura is an erect annual herb, on
average 30 to 150 cm (1-5 feet) tall with erect, forking and
purple stems.

Datura stramonium is the botanical name of the plant
more commonly known as jimsonweed. Other common names for
jimsonweed include angel's trumpet, devil's trumpet, jamestown
weed, loco weed, moonflower, and thorn-apple.
- It
contains tropane alkaloids that are sometimes used as a
hallucinogen. The active ingredients are atropine, hyoscyamine
and scopolamine which are classified as deliriants, or
anticholinergics.
Processing
- The
commercial drug as imported into Great Britain consists of the
leaves and young shoots, collected while the plant is in flower,
and subsequently dried, and containing the shrivelled, bristly
young fruits, tubular calyx, and yellowish corolla, but the
official description, for medicinal purposes, permits of the use
of the leaves only.
Application
- Stramonium
was used to relax the smooth muscle of the bronchial tubes, and
thus it was used to treat an asthmatic's bronchial spasm.
- Daturine
was also used to treat acute mania as hyoscyamine was said to
produce sleep.
- The plant
is used internally in the treatment of asthma and Parkinson's
disease, excess causes giddiness, dry mouth, hallucinations and
coma
Market
- The demand
for the seed is very limited, but the dry leaves find a ready
market.
