Technology
- The word
ceramic is derived from the Greek word (keramikos). The term
covers inorganic non-metallic materials whose formation is due
to the action of heat. The word ceramic can be an adjective, and
can also be used as a noun to refer to a ceramic material, or a
product of ceramic manufacture. Ceramics is a singular noun
referring to the art of making things out of ceramic materials.
- The
technology of manufacturing and usage of ceramic materials is
part of the field of ceramic engineering. Many ceramic materials
are hard, porous and brittle. The study and development of
ceramics includes methods to mitigate problems associated with
these characteristics, and to accentuate the strengths of the
materials as well as to investigate novel applications.
Manufacturing
Process
- The new
process is characterized by direct chemical bonding of
monomolecular layer of organic binder on the surface of ceramics
raw materials particle, and binding together of binder layers
through external stimulation (Figure). Fastening raw material
particles together through stronger chemical bonding by organic
binder is an effective means to reduce the binder consumption in
the ceramic manufacturing process.
- The Basic
Production Process of Traditional ceramics : Raw material,
crushing and secondary crushing, blending, pulverization and
kneading, forming, drying, firing, processing and shipment .
- Natural
raw materials contain mixtures of various components. The
quality of ceramic products will deteriorate if much iron and
titanium are contained, so it is necessary to use the materials
containing the least of these elements. The components of the
natural raw material vary according to the lot to be produced;
therefore, it is essential to set up material acceptance
standards to inspect chemical components, refractoriness,
ignition loss and other related factors.
Market
-
The
total market value of the tableware ceramic industry in 2000 is
projected to rise by 7% year-on-year, and 80% of which are for
the export orientation.
-
The
tableware ceramic industry uses clay as the main ingredient,
which can be obtained in the country, except some materials that
manufacturers need to import due to a typical attribute such as
bone ashes, etc. Nevertheless, the small and medium-sized
manufacturers in particular currently prefer to use instant clay
or compound clay in the production process owing to convenience
and timeliness.
-
The
export value of tableware ceramic in 1999 is expected to slump
by 9.7% year-on-year to be 4,650 million baht. On volume, the
export slid by 1% only amounting to 58,800 tons.
-
A total
of 90-100 manufacturers have currently operated in the tableware
ceramic industry. Most of them are small and medium-sized. The
tableware industry is the oriented-export production, accounting
for above 70%.
