- Potassium permanganate is
an oxidising agent with disinfectant, deodorising and astringent
properties. Its chemical formula is KmnO4 and it is sometimes called by
its common name Condy's crystals.
- Potassium permanganate is
very fast reacting (on the order of seconds) with hydrogen sulfide and
organic odor compounds, making it a good choice for application in
solids processing where retention times may be very short.
- Potassium permanganate is
the inorganic chemical compound K[[manganese|Mn]]O4, a water soluble
salt consisting of equal mole amounts of potassium (K+) and permanganate
(MnO4-, officially called manganate(VII) ) ions.
- Potassium permanganate is
manufactured on a large scale from manganese dioxide. The mineral
pyrolusite is fused with potassium hydroxide and heated in air or with
potassium nitrate (a source of oxygen).
- Potassium permanganate,
obtainable at pool supply stores, is used in rural areas to remove iron
and hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell) from well and waste water.
- Potassium permanganate can
be used to quantitatively determine the total oxidisable organic
material in an aqueous sample.

and cannot therefore be used as a primary standard.
- Currently, in aquaculture
worldwide, KMnO4 has been used as a water/bath treatment for protozoan
parasites in commercial and ornamental fish culture.

(KMnO4) is one of the widely used inorganic chemicals worldwide and much
information is available on its chemistry, manufacture and various use.
- It has been used in fish
ponds to treat common fish pathogens such as gill parasites and external
bacterial and fungal infections.
- Potassium permanganate is
commercially available in crystal or powder form. it should be mixed
with water before use, and then applied evenly over the entire pond
surface to ensure an effective treatment.
- Potassium permanganate,
although one of the safest internal and external disinfectants in
correct dilution, has toxic properties when used in concentration, and
may even cause death, as has been shown by a review of the available
literature.
