- Dimercaprol is a
chelating (KEE-late-ing) agent. A chelating agent is capable of
removing a heavy metal, such as lead or mercury, from the blood.
- Dimercaprol is
used to treat poisoning with arsenic, gold, or mercury. It is also
used together with another medication called edetate disodium (EDTA)
to treat lead poisoning.
- Dimercaprol
contains not less than 98.5 per cent and
not more than the equivalent of 101.5 per cent of (2RS)-2,3
disulfanylpropan-1-ol.
- Dimercaprol is a
clear, colorless or pale yellow liquid. It has a mercaptan-like,
disagreeable odor. It is miscible with methanol and with ethanol
(99.5). It is soluble in peanut oil, and sparingly soluble in water.
It shows no optical rotation.
- Dimercaprol has a
strong odour and gives the breath an unpleasant mercaptan-like odour.
- Dimercaprol is
prepared by the bromination of allyl alcohol to glycerol
di-bromine-hydrine followed by reaction with sodium hydrosulfide
under pressure. It can also be prepared by hydrogenizing
hydroxide propylene trisulfide .
- BAL in Oil
(Dimercaprol Injection USP) is indicated in the treatment of
arsenic, gold and mercury poisoning. It is indicated in acute lead
poisoning when used concomitantly with Edetate Calcium Disodium
Injection USP.
- Dimercaprol
Injection USP is effective for use in acute poisoning by mercury
salts if therapy is begun within one or two hours following
ingestion. It is not very effective for chronic mercury poisoning.
- Dimercaprol as
one of the main antidotes used in the management of
poisoning by lead and other heavy metals.
