Information @ a Glance
Introduction
-
Coughing is one of the most recognizable symptoms of illness.
-
It can also be one of the most annoying. Frequent coughing can
irritate the throat, make the ribs sore and even be embarrassing.
-
Coughing related to upper respiratory tract infections is one of the
most frequent reasons for ambulatory visits to health-care
providers.
-
If you have a dry, hacking cough, dextromethorphan may give you
relief. Generally, these cough syrups and cough medicines are not
used to suppress a cough where you cough up mucus.
-
Hydrocodone is a semi-synthetic opiate and is considered to have the
strongest effect in blocking the cough reflex. Like all narcotics,
it can cause drowsiness and decrease respiratory drive.
-
In addition, chronic use can lead to addiction. It is commonly
combined with medications such as acetaminophen and homatropine to
discourage overuse.
-
Dextromethorphan is a non-opiate antitussive medication that has
been available over the counter since 1958. It does not have the
side effects of sedation or respiratory suppression. Its
effectiveness has been debated, and it is generally not considered
effective in children.
-
Three types of cough medicines are available OTC for the temporary
relief of cough due to a cold or bronchitis. These cough medicines
include cough suppressants, oral expectorants, and topical
(externally applied) drugs.
Technology
Report
-
Law
enforcement authorities and treatment providers primarily in Houston
and San Antonio (TX), Alabama, and other areas of the southern
United States, are reporting that abuse of a readily available
prescription-strength cough syrup containing promethazine (an
antihistamine antiemetic) and codeine (a prescription opioid)
appears to be increasing.
-
Fifty
patients of either sex aged 15 - 65 years entered the study to test
the efficacy and tolerability of a herbal preparation known as
Khasceeze-SF Cough Syrup. They were studied for cough and related
symptoms such as sore throat, sneezing, breathlessness and fever.
-
Substantial improvement, i.e., excellent to good response, in relief
of cough and other symptoms was noted over 84% out of 50 patients
and fair response in 11.64%. Only 4.10% patients showed poor relief
in symptoms hence suggested Khasceeze-SF Cough Syrup facilitated a
healing touch to the diseased bronchial tree and helps alleviate the
cough of any aetiology.
-
No
drowsiness, irritability, or dryness in mouth was seen with
Khasceeze-SF Cough Syrup.
-
Many
infections are treatable with drugs/antibiotics. Cough syrups that
contain glyceryl guaiacolate can improve secretion of cervical
mucus, in some cases, where trauma has decreased the production of
cervical mucus.
-
Prescription-strength promethazine and codeine cough syrup is
legitimately used to treat
allergies, bronchitis, the common cold, influenza, and sinusitis.
