- Activated alumina is manufactured
from aluminium hydroxide by dehydroxylating it in a way that
produces a highly porous material.
- Activated alumina is used for a
wide range of adsorbent and catalyst applications including the
adsorption of catalysts in polyethylene production, in hydrogen
peroxide production, as a selective adsorbent for many chemicals
including arsenic, fluoride, in sulfur removal from gas streams
(Claus Catalyst process).
- Activated alumina is also widely
used to remove fluoride from drinking water. In the US, there are
widespread programs to fluoridate drinking water.
- Activated alumina filters can
easily reduce fluoride levels from .5 ppm to less than .1 ppm. The
amount of fluoride leached from the water being filtered depends on
how long the water is actually touching the alumina filter media.
Basically, the more alumina in the filter, the less fluoride will be
in the final, filtered water.
- Defluoridation using Activated
Alumina (AA) has been one of the widely used adsorption/ ion
exchange methods water and many reports are available on large-scale
installations for townships, requiring supervision and skilled
personnel. The quality of treated water from such facilities was
assured.
- Regeneration of exhausted
Activated Alumina and its reuse for multiple cycles is one of the
main advantages of using Activated Alumina for defluoridation.
- Activated alumina treatment is
used to attract and remove contaminant, like arsenic and fluoride,
which have negatively charged ions.
- Activated alumina (a form of
aluminum oxide) is typically housed in canisters through which
source water is passed for treatment. A series of such canisters can
be linked together to match the water volume requirements of any
particular system.
- Activated alumina technology can
be expensive, and many of its costs are associated with disposal of
the contaminated water that is created when alumina is purged of
contaminants and “reset” for future use. Large-scale activated
alumina systems also require a high level of operational and
maintenance expertise, and consequently are relatively rare
- Activated Alumina is a highly
porous form of aluminum oxide, produced by partially dehydrating
Aluminum Trihydrate. Activated Alumina has the ability to adsorb a
large number of contaminants as a result of its highly porous
structure. This porosity and the surface chemistry of Activated
Alumina gives it catalytic properties useful in many industrial
applications.
