Bottled water is drinking water,
carbonated water, mineral water, distilled water, spring water,
artesian well water, or
de-ionized water packaged in plastic bottles or glass bottles.
-
Drinking water (bottled) can reasonably be expected to contain at
least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of
contaminants does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a
health risk. For example, minerals such as magnesium and calcium
give water a distinctive flavor, and are essential to the body.
-
Carbonated water (also known as club soda, soda water, sparkling
water, seltzer, or fizzy water) is water into which carbon
dioxide gas under pressure has been dissolved, a process that causes
the water to become effervescent.
- Carbonated water is the defining ingredient of carbonated soft
drinks. The process of dissolving carbon dioxide in water is
called carbonation.
-
Today, carbonated water is made by
passing pressurized carbon dioxide through water. The pressure
increases the solubility and allows more carbon dioxide to dissolve
than would be possible under standard atmospheric pressure. When the
bottle is
opened, the pressure is released, allowing the gas to come out of
the solution, thus forming the
characteristic bubbles.
- Micro filtration (0.1
micron) removes most of the fine suspended solids in the water and
almost all protozoa and bacteria but is not able to remove the dissolved
part of the natural organic matter.
- Ultra filtration has
smaller pores than used in micro filtration, can remove finer particles
from the water and is capable of removing viruses also.
- In 2005, China
produced 13.9 million tons of
drinking water, up 23.75% over the same period in 2004. In 2006 and
2007, the growth rate was 13.67% and 16.46% respectively, less than
that of 2005. In 2008, the output was 24.8 million tons, increasing
rapidly.
-
In India total market
size of the bottled water is Rs 2000 crore, of this around Rs 1700 crore
is in the hands of organized sector and the rest is with unorganized
sector.
- Consumption of
bottled water in India is linked to the level of prosperity in the
different regions. In India the western region accounts for 40 per
cent of the market and the eastern region just 10. However, the
bottling plants are concentrated in the southern region - of the
approximately 1,200 bottling water plants in India, 600 are in Tamil
Nadu. This is a major problem because southern India, especially
Tamil Nadu, is wate starved.
