-
Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique used in
procedures such as tubal ligation, gallbladder removal or hiatal hernia
repair.
-
Laparoscopy is usually performed under general anesthesia; however it
can be performed with other types of anesthesia that permit the patient
to remain awake.
-
Laparoscopy is a procedure that allows your surgeon to view (and in some
cases, perform surgery on) the organs in your abdomen, such as the
intestines, stomach, and gallbladder, and in women, pelvic organs, such
as the ovaries.
-
Laparoscopical surgery is not as aggressive and does not make the
postoperatory as painful.
-
The
laparoscope is placed in an incision in the belly button in order to
see. Other incisions may also be made for lasers and instruments for
major surgery.
-
Laparoscopic surgery includes operations within the abdominal or pelvic
cavities, whereas keyhole surgery performed on the thoracic or chest
cavity is called thoracoscopic surgery.
-
The
technique of laparoscopy was developed in the beginning of the 20th
century and found use mainly in Europe. The procedure has undergone
rapid development in recent years, thanks to the efforts of both
European and American surgeons and endoscopists.
-
There
are two types of laparoscope: (1) a telescopic rod lens system, that is
usually connected to a video camera (single chip or three chip), or (2)
a digital laparoscope where the charge-coupled device is placed at the
end of the laparoscope, eliminating the rod lens system.
-
The
potential benefits of laparoscopic surgery include the reduction of
postoperative morbidity and pain, less compromise of gastrointestinal
function and earlier return to a normal socio-professional activity.
