- Gilsonite is a naturally
occurring glossy black asphaltic, solid hydrocarbon resin with a low
specific gravity. It occurs in its very pure natural state in a
mineral called Uintaite.
- Gilsonite, a unique
natural hydrocarbon high in asphaltenes and nitrogen compounds, is a
granular solid that is fully compatible with bitumen. It can be
melted into hot bitumen, added during the hot-mix manufacturing process,
or blended into a preservation treatment
- Gilsonite is widely used
to prevent or cure loss of cement slurry circulation while cementing oil
and gas wells.
- Gilsonite uses a physical
process to stabilize shales rather than the chemical process most widely
used in the industry. The mineral, when added to a drilling fluid
system, would penetrate the micro-fractures or pore spaces of shale as
the bit penetrates the formation.
- Much gilsonite is used
directly in its crude form, as insulation pipelines, particularly hot
pipes, as water proofing and underating for wood and metal, and as
paving, roofing and other uses with crude asphalt.
- Gilsonite is used in
drilling mud fluids and oil well cementing. Gilsonite, in a range of
softening points and particle sizes, is a standard ingredient in
oil-based drilling muds used in shales and other difficult geological
formations. The addition of specially-treated Gilsonite to water-based
drilling fluids helps minimize hole washout by stabilizing troublesome
shales, and seals off highly permeable sands while reducing torque and
drag.
- Gilsonite combines with
many other chemicals and materials that take advantage of its unique
physical and chemical properties. Binder and coating applications in
metallurgical, wood product, refractary and other industries further
demonstrate the versatility and usefulness of this remarkable material.
- Gilsonite is generally
soluble in aliphatic and aromatic solvents at ambient temperatures. Some
agitation should be used. The rate of solution will depend on the type
of solvent, the type and severity of mixing, and the grade of Gilsonite.
- Gilsonite products are
also approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration for use in resinous
and polymeric coatings that come into direct contact with food.
- Gilsonite is also used in
protective coverings, anticorrosive paints, roofing compounds, dark
rotogravure printing inks, carbon electrodes for the nuclear industry,
varnishes, and as a reducing agent in slurry explosives
