- Coumatetralyl technical
is a white to yellow-grey crystalline powder with a characteristic
slight odour and a melting point of 168.8°C.
- Coumatetralyl, IUPAC
name: 4-hydroxy-3-(1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydro-1-naphthyl) coumarin, CAS
number [5836-29-3], is a rodenticide produced by Bayer Environmental
Science at Bayer AG site in Uerdingen (Germany).
- Coumatetralyl is
commonly used with grains and other cereals as a rodent poison in
conjunction with a tracking powder to monitor feeding activity in
a particular area.
- Coumatetralyl can be
classified as a moderately leachable compound in sand soil. In loamy
sand and sandy loam no leaching of coumatetralyl was observed.
- Anticoagulant
rodenticides are easily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and
may also be absorbed through the skin and respiratory system.
- The major difference
between warfarin and the other anticoagulants (both indandiones and
second-generation hydroxycoumarins) is that they have a longer retention
time in the body and consequently a more prolonged effect than warfarin.
- The major difference
between first- and second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides is that
the latter have longer body retention and therefore tend to lead to a
longer period of bleeding.
- Anticoagulant
rodenticides are available in a variety of different formulations,
including paraffin wax blocks, whole grain baits, pelleted baits and
tracking powder.
