Introduction
- Carbaryl is a
broad-spectrum insecticide that kills insects by contact and stomach
poisoning.
- Carbamate insecticides
are reversible inhibitors of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase.

Process
- Carbaryl is
produced by treating methyl isocyanate with 1-naphthol
.
- There are no
natural sources. Carbaryl is obtained from 1-naphthol, either by
reaction with methylisocyanate or by treatment with phosgene and
subsequent reaction of the resulting chloroformate with methylamine
Uses
- It is
used as a spraying powder (50% + 12.5% Tetradifon; 37.5 % + 11.2
% Dioxathion) in winegrowing e.g. against mites and in
combination with lindane against potato-bugs.
- It is used on a
variety of crops including soy, corn, and citrus, and is also
applied to livestock and home garden uses.
- Its primary use
is as an insecticide on various commercial crops, including but
not limited to corn, soybean, cotton, citruses, pears, and nuts.
- It is the
active ingredient in Carylderm shampoo used to combat head lice
until infestation is eliminated.
Toxicity
- Carbaryl is
a toxic insecticide used on a large scale in forestry
application to kill insects such as bark beetles.
- Carbaryl is
a cholinesterase inhibitor and is toxic to humans. It is
classified as a likely human carcinogen by the United States
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA.).
- Carbaryl is
acutely toxic to honeybees, destroying colonies of bees
foraging in an area where the chemical has been applied.
- Carbaryl is
illegal in several countries, including the United Kingdom,
Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Angola.
